Summer is almost over—where has the time gone? What have we done? Well, the Crawford lab was abuzz with activity starting with the PhD commencement ceremony in May (Figure 1). Congrats to Nicole Restrepo, our newly minted PhD in human genetics! In June, both Nicole Restrepo and Haines lab post-doctoral fellow Jessica Cooke Bailey gave talks at the Visual Sciences Research Symposium here at CWRU (Figure 2). The Crawford lab also welcomed summer research volunteer Sarah Laper visiting from Eastern Virginia Medical School (Figure 3). Throughout the summer, we all attended departmental coffee breaks (Figure 4) and seminars, and we gave input on practice talks (Figure 5). We also had time for some fun group lunches (Figure 6). The summer culminated with the submission of six manuscripts to the Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing. Here’s hoping at least one is accepted for the 2016 proceedings!
As we head toward the start of fall semester, the Crawford lab is gearing for some major changes. Nicole officially started her Computational Genomic Epidemiology of Cancer (CoGEC) fellowship and is busy forming her new mentoring committee. With the departure of Dr. Amy Non from Vanderbilt University to UCSD this summer, Brittany Hollister has a new Vanderbilt mentor (Dr. Melinda Aldrich). Sarah Laper has returned to Eastern Virginia Medical School to start her second year (good luck!). And, Dr. Sabrina Mitchell will be ending her post-doctoral fellowship with the Crawford lab on August 31st. Looks like it’s time to find some new crew members for the Crawford lab!
